Chapter Seven

Kitty heard Treyton’s door slam and heard footsteps running down the stairs. A figure appeared right in front of her, dressed in heels and a trench coat.

“Samantha,” she said in surprise. “When did you get here?”

She already knew the answer. Edgar informed her when Treyton came home and when Samantha followed shortly after. Nothing happened in Kitty’s house without her knowledge, even when they tried to hide it.

“Just a little bit ago. I came to visit Treyton and check up on him, but he was tired from his work today. So, I’ll just go home. I’ll be back later this week,” Samantha replied.

“Okay, have a good night.”

“You too.”

Treyton must have started to come to his senses and send that hussy packing, Kitty tells herself. She had no idea what he saw in her. Well, that wasn’t true. He looked at Samantha like an easy lay. Kitty couldn’t get mad at him. He was a boy, and boys had urges. She had no problems with him dating anyone; she just wanted him to find a girl with a good head on her shoulders. She could come from a good family or have a career, and her son could settle down with and have a family together. At this rate, Kitty would be well into her seventies before she became a grandmother.

“Kitty,” Richard’s voice rang out from the parlor.

“In the living room,” Kitty replied. She heard footfalls coming in her direction. She downed her martini and made a scotch for her husband while fixing another drink for herself.

“Thank you, dear,” he said, taking the drink from her and kissing her on the cheek. “Is dinner ready? I’m starved.”

“Yes, I’ll ask the cook to bring it out right now.” Kitty picked up a bell and rang it. The couple moved to the dining room and was served steak and potatoes.

“I saw Samantha run out the door just now. Is everything okay with her?” Richard asked before putting a forkful of steak into his mouth.

“She said that Treyton sent her home because he was tired from work today.”

“I would hope so. I got him working with one of our lead researchers, Layla. She is organized and will get him in line. She also volunteers at the shelter. So, I assigned her to work with him in both places. He could learn a thing or two from that girl.”

“Learn from who?” Treyton strode into the room, freshly showered, and sat down at the table. The cook brought him a plate, and he started to eat like he hadn’t eaten anything all day.

“Layla,” his father replied like it was the most obvious answer.

“Oh, her.”

“What does that mean?” Richard asked.

“Don’t you think she is a little pretentious? She acted like a know-it-all and annoyed me all day. Can’t you have me working with someone else? How about Anette?”

“No, I can’t. I think you will work together nicely. This is non-negotiable,” Richard said firmly.

“Why don’t you like Layla? You tend to like everyone you meet,” Kitty commented before Treyton could answer.
